ONE OF THE CORE IDEAS BEHIND SELF EVIDENT TRUTHS, IS THAT PEOPLE DON’T FIT INTO OVER-SIMPLIFIED BOXES. EVERYONE FALLS SOMEWHERE ON A NUANCED SPECTRUM OF HUMAN SEXUALITY.
I had turned on a Ted Talks playlist recently for some background noise while I edited some photographs for a new organic and wellness directory yoursoulfood.com and while I was editing, an intriguing story completely diverted my attention: iO Tillett Wright: 50 shades of gay.
Usually, listening is enough but I had to watch as I listened to this woman speak of her life while growing up in New York in the 80s. Her talk was inspiring and honest and wasn’t at all hesitant to talk about her decision to become a boy at around 11, completely embracing this decision, even acting along side Christian Slater.. as a boy and no-one knew any different.
When puberty hit, she decided to become a girl and embraced that side of herself as well. As she talked more about this, and falling in love and relationships with different genders, she introduced her project, her contribution to our society: Self Evident Truths
This project consisted of photographed portraits of people from all over the US that felt like they weren’t 100% straight or didn’t fall into a certain category that was straight, bisexual, gay or transgender.
Its not all black and white.
